A Message to our Community

Hello Staircase Supporters, Artists, Community Friends

It is my sincere hope that this letter finds you and your families safe and well during these challenging times. Now that I have had a few days to act I want to update you on our progress.

The Staircase has in normal times a complex and varied selection of bookings throughout our month, large public gatherings, small private events, self-sufficient workshops/businesses, a diverse and robust Improv community etc. Just as I have always worked with everyone on an individual basis to organize our events I wanted to extend the same care to un-booking these events and addressing how covid-19 is impacting each of their lives. It’s a changing landscape hourly and we want to do our best for our community as a whole and for all the independent artists that are finding themselves with a sudden and complete loss of income.

As of March 12th I began connecting with all of our events -our position was a push for producers to re-schedule or suspend services for any event happening in the next 4-6 weeks. We felt this was the most prudent decision going forward globally. Our Improv division, Staircase Improv suspended all workshops, series and drop-in classes until further notice. To advocate and minimize the risk to our co-workers on March 13th, all food and drink services were suspended. With today’s announcement from the Provincial government we will continue to suspend all events until we are directed that it is safe to do so otherwise.

To our artist friends, I extend my condolences – a lot of hard work and soul has gone into getting your productions to this point and I grieve along with you for the loss. To all of you, our supporters- as varied as our bookings are so is our community of friends- I will personally miss seeing your faces, hearing your stories, sharing in your celebrations over the next coming weeks. It has been our absolute pleasure and honour to have shared so many moments together.

Eventually, the risk will pass and we will need the support of community, even more so, to be able to make our way out of the damage as a venue- and to be here to support independent artists as they too crawl out. I would like to thank The Hamilton Fellowships, Yoga with Tamara, the McMaster Centre for Community-Engaged Narrative Arts for already reaching out and donating to The Staircase. Your generosity and thoughtfulness is so very much appreciated in these universally challenging times.

Above all friends, keep safe and well and let’s look forward to the times of community and joy on the horizon.

All the best,

Colette
