The Staircase took it’s annual summer hiatus which meant of course that we were busier than ever!!!  Thank to the efforts of all our volunteers who gave their time and endless energy to help improve this beautiful space, it is much appreciated. The new fall season will see a spiffy newly painted theatre, remodelled cafe and thanks to our very good friend and talented craftsman, Hamish, the cafe has a beautiful new raised stage area…concerts, karaoke, speeches, powerpoints and standup will never look so good.  We did all this but still had time to go HOLLYWOOD!…the cafe received an early Christmas make-over with the filming of The Hallmark Channel’s Production, ANGEL DUTY.

For more info about the movie click here.

THE And if that wasn’t enough facetime for this old Diva we also made the cover of PUB MAGAZINE along with a very nice blurb about our little establishment.  So make sure to drop by and sample our exclusive local micro-brewery, Cameron’s, draught, before you take in one of the many shows we have lined up for this fall!

The Staircase is beautifying!

It’s that time of the year people…summer vacation, where we discreetly close the front doors and then have our cafe face lifted, sanded and puttied ready to unveil August 22nd…but that doesn’t mean it’s not business as usual for our resident services and party bookings it just means you have to enter through the rear door!  Be sure to check our online calendar for schedules.

Pick up a copy of the July edition of Pub Magazine that  features the Staircase cafe and theatre, a great place to have some culture with a Pint of your favorite Cameron’s Beer

This retreat style workshop provides a chance to bring actors of all levels together to truly embrace the contagious passion of performance with new & familiar faces of our community. This workshop isn’t as much about performance but more about the performer and the strengthen, conviction & consistent courage it takes to make truly remarkable characters & divulge their moments on stage. Through self reflection and exploratory exercises (acting/improv/asking questions and listening to ourselves), we will be uncovering solutions for the dis-connect that actors often struggle with when trying to understand their characters. *Please RSVP that you will be attending by Friday July 22/2011.

THE SPECIALS in La Revolucion

Toronto’s foremost satirists – The Specials – come to the Staircase with their

absurd and irreverent take on world affairs, pop culture and human idiocy.

Sandra Battaglini is one of Toronto’s most popular stand-up comedians. She is currently developing a satirical news program for Italy’s RAI network and can be seen in the upcoming feature film “Running Mates” with Henry Winkler. She hosts two of Toronto’s edgiest comedy rooms alongside Phil Luzi: “Sandra Frigginelli & Friends” at the Underground Comedy Lounge, and “The Royal Family Cabaret”, at the Bread & Circus.

Precious Chong is currently developing a television series called “Single Mom” which was one of 21 pitches chosen to showcase by Insight Entertainment. Most recently she can be seen in HBO Canada’s second season of “Living in Your Car” as Christy, the stilt walker and as a screaming wife in “Flashpoint”. Her dad is Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong.

Phil Luzi is known for his character creation and hosting Toronto’s wackiest shows! He hosts “Sandra Frigginelli & Friends” as the eccentric Sal Feldman, Toronto’s largest non-union talent agent and “The Royal Family Cabaret” with Sandra Battaglini. He also co-hosts, “Carolina Dai”, a satirical Italian lifestyle program currently in development with RAI. He is half of “Kritch & Krütch”, a new comedy musical duo with Christopher Sawchyn. Listen for their upcoming hit single, “I Want to Dance (with you tonight)”.

Christopher Sawchyn has a reputation for his absurdist take on character invention and musical theatre. He combines his extensive background in classical theatre and dance, with bouffon and clown to create a surreal world where anything is possible. He is half of “Kritch & Krütch”, and resident choreographer of The Specials.

A group of artists, crafters, and bakers all in one place.  Every Saturday starting May 14th 4pm 25 Dundurn St north a wide range of Arts and crafts,  live music and a side of something sweet.  With over 30 artists there is sure to be something for everyone.  So please join us on and check out all the local talent…
