The Hamilton Film Festival Nov 2-7

This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Hamilton Film Festival with the Staircase Theatre.  We continue to partner with festival director Nathan Fleet in celebrating and promoting independent local and international films.  For more information about scheduled programming, workshops, awards and encore screenings please visit the Hamilton Film Festival website.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The Hamilton Film Festival takes place in Ontario Canada at the historic Staircase Theatre. Hundreds of mainstream and independent films have been screened in the intimate theatre, which was the first LCD projector theatre to operate in Canada. A new screen has been added as well as HD projection! Theatre owner Hugh McLeod and the many staff and volunteers proudly support independent film and will continue to do so with this years 5th installment of the Hamilton Film Festival.

HFF09 introduced industry panels and awards, something that will continue this year. Last year OMNIVAC took home the Jury Choice award and THE YARD SALE claimed the Audience Choice award. Three films received a distribution offer as a direct result of our festival and panel discussion. This year our programmers will reach out further to bring more student and community based  films to our festival. Social Media sites like facebook and twitter will offer up-to-the-minute updates throughout the year, especially during the festival. What a great feeling knowing that we have made it to our fifth anniversary, and it keeps getting better. – Nathan Fleet, Festival Director 2010

Nov 1st 7-9pm Cheryl Suitor Art Launch ‘Dancing in the Rain’

“Dancing in the Rain”
Paintings by Cheryl Suitor

OPENING NOVEMBER 1 2010 7-9 p.m.

Cheryl Suitor is a Hamilton area artist, who has recently returned to painting after
a time focussed upon raising a family and learning from her children the difficult
task of not merely trying to survive but, as the saying goes to “Dance in the Rain”.
This expression is never more true for this artist than when she is painting and
playing music.  Many people, especially in Hamilton at this time are having to face
and find a way to survive some very tough times.  “Dancing in the Rain” is an
expression of Cheryl’s journey through her art to go beyond survival to holding
true to her unique spiritual dance.  Hopefully it will be of some encouragement to
others to live true to their heart, not to be defeated, but to see the larger picture and
to carry on in their own unique way.  This world, our community and our families
can only benefit if in the toughest of times we still look for what is good, stand
with all the strength we can muster and fight despair, work for change, and refuse
to allow our inner spirit to be extinguished.

Cheryl Suitor will also be contributing two paintings and a poem on the subject of
War and Peace to a Show on “War” at Gallery 435 (435 Barton Street East  in
Hamilton) opening on Thursday November 11 at 5:30 p.m.

Thurs Oct 14th SOLD OUT

Sat Oct 16th Tickets $25

When Paste Magazine did a poll of its readers and artists, Bill was rated #65 in the top 100 living songwriters!
…Bill writes deeply personal songs that are focused on his Christian faith, his family, and his life and struggles. This is not a rock concert, and it is not praise and worship music. This will be Bill with an acoustic guitar, and his wife Muriah on keyboards singing songs that will make you think about your life, and the world you live in.
That said, this is intended to be a fun and relaxing evening listening to some great music! If you like roots folk – the music of Dylan, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, then you’ll appreciate an evening with Bill Mallonee.boosch@me.com

FRIDAY OCT 1st TWO FLOORS OF AWESOME CONCERTS

First up in the Beautiful Brightroom:

Mike Evin, David Celia and Brent Titcomb in Concert 8pm

Like so many of his talented Canadian contemporaries, David Celia is a “best kept secret” at home. Fresh off his 12th tour of England, Holland and Belgium, with a jaunt to NYC, Chicago and Nashville, David brings his “roots rock with hints of folk wrapped in a pop package” home for a scant few months. He has shared stages with Elvis Costello, Fairport Convention and Shawn Colvin.

Mike Evin just finished his new album, “Do You Feel The World?” in Nashville, TN. Whether you’ve been a fan since his colorful power-pop work with The Brothers Creeggan and Barenaked Ladies or his more recent communal impromptu sing-a-longs, this album’s got it all. His music has been played on CBC and he has shared stages with Ron Sexsmith, Sarah Harmer and many other notable Canadian musicians.

MIKE EVIN

“Mike Evin’s musical savvy and good-times attitude do indeed make him the best national treasure you’ve never heard.”
– Soundproof Magazine

“The songs somehow feel intimate, like a private conversation, but also make you want to sing-along and when it comes to being a charismatic piano man, in my opinion, that’s what it’s all about.”
-HEROHILL.COM

“Good Watermelon’s combination of wit and wide-eyed innocence is beginning to establish Evin as a voice to be reckoned with within the Canadian scene.”
-THE RECORD

DAVID CELIA

Like so many of his talented Canadian contemporaries, David Celia is a “best kept secret” at home. Fresh off his 12th tour of Europe, including Glastonbury Festival’s 40th anniversary, David brings his “roots rock with hints of folk wrapped in a pop package” home for a scant few months. He Just released his third album, “I Tried” (Experience/Universal) which is already getting regular rotation on CBC and BBC radio in England.

I like the sentiment in your lyrics” ~ Gordon Lightfoot

BRENT TITCOMB

Brent’s early work helped forge the sound of legendary folk/rock group Three’s a Crowd. The group recorded a few singles and one album, Christopher’s Movie Matinee, produced by Cass Elliott of the Mamas and Papas and Steve Barry on ABC/Dunhill Records. Brent worked with Anne Murray in the studio and on the road, and gave her a successful hit when she recorded his composition, Sing High, Sing Low. His material was also performed and recorded by Glen Campbell, Andy Williams and the Osmonds. He’s furnished backup for the likes of Bruce Cockburn, Don Ross, Oliver Schroer, Daisy Debolt, Tom Wilson and his son Liam Titcomb.

These days, Brent is a member of the ‘artist collective’ Lee Harvey Osmond, the brainchild of longtime friend Tom Wilson. He plays harmonica, percussion and sings. They have been touring extensively in Canada as well as crossing the border now and then. Brent says it’s a dream come true. He always wanted to be in a rock band! He’s almost 70 and he’s rocking alright!

IN THE CAFE…GOSPEL SINGER YOANNE FREGET 9pm

Yoann Freget has been singer since his childhood. At the age of fifteen he attended for the first time a concert of Gospel music, with the famous singer, musician and composer Emmanuel Djob (“Black an’ White Gospel singers”, “By the Gospel River”), directing the « Gospelize it! Mass Choir ». It was a deep spiritual and musical revelation for Yoann. Few months later, he passed the casting to get in this Gospel choir composed of 70 chorists – wich was one of the most famous one in Europe. He sang there for three years, quickly became solist and really started to feel and understand the essence of the African-american music, wich can, according to him, drop, by the Power of Love, all the artificial limitations (color, religion, country…).  Then, Yoann sang in various music bands, among them : “BRBB”, a Tribute to Otis Redding, with an orchestra of 6 musicians ; in the famous “Soul Travellers” band ; in the masculine Gospel quintet “Gospel Shakers” ; also in “Gospel Jam”, duet with the well known Gospel singer Sabine Kouli (“Maezah” and “Soul Spirit”) ; as chorist for the last album of Marianne Aya Omac (“Ginkobiloba”), “Be my witness”. On his musical way he had occasions to be encouraged or invited on the scene by renowned artists, as Stevie Wonder, Liz Mc Comb, Dove Attia (Jury of “La Nouvelle Star”- the french “New Idol”), or else Ahmed Mouici (“Pow Wow”, “Les Dix Commandements”). Since 2006, he started to lead his own Gospel choir “Le Choeur Enchante” and to give singing lessons. He also has been called to animate Gospel workshops in different countries, like Italy, England, and Germany, to share his vision and experience of Gospel music. In May 2010, Yoann came back from a travel of five months throughout India. By this travel, he learnt both indian singing and spirituality – wich are basically one – and this did considerably enriched and inspired him. At the age of twenty three, Yoann is actually preparing his first solo album, wich is a gathering of personal and co- compositions, with different text-writers and composers. Since September until half of December 2010, he will be touring Canada and USA. Tour dates will be written soon on myspace soon. Yoann is still looking for other collaborations for the creation and the future distribution of this first album.
