9/11/11 A Musical Comedy

9/11/11 a musical comedy

The Mayor of Toronto has plans to Ford-ify the city to make it terrorist-proof. This means the Sal Feldman Talent Agency has to move by September 11, 2011, as it’s the proposed site of the Mayor’s new security headquarters. How will a musical commemorating the events of 9/11 save the agency from extinction? Don’t miss The Specials this fall. Directed by Toronto’s own, Melissa D’Agostino (Lupe:Undone, A Very Lupe X-Mas, Lupe’s Next Top Lupe). This show will make you lose your head!

DJ Dupree is a born and raised music freak.  She began DJing in part, to justify her dizzying collection of music, but mostly to create one of a kind soundtracks to events and parties.  The majority of her sets are improvised, using a wide variety of music across many genres and time periods.  Every occasion has a unique experience!   DJ Dupree was also the co-founder of Steeltown Sirens Burlesque, performing as Jezebel Dupree throughout the ensemble’s dynasty of cheek and sass.

Charming. Effervescent. Gracious. Punctual. Superlatives like these have been applied to many people, and Paul Hutcheson is no exception. His ribald take on modern living, tempered by a boyish glee makes for a performance you’ll want to take home with you and stuff under your pillow. Paul’s been performing solo for seven years with his shows “The First Time”, “On Second Thought. “Third Times A Charm” “comparable to Jim Carey, only not obnoxious.”CBC Winnipeg ***** Uptown Magazine “If David Sedaris wrote a fringe play, this would be it.” Monday MagazineAWARDS:

Brainy, bright, brilliant, clever, intelligent, sharp, smart and quick witted are just a few words Ben has looked up in his Thesaurus. This accomplished stand up comedian has also received formal training with The Second City and The Staircase Theatre for improvisation. He can dance too. Sex, pornography, spousal abuse and gay issues are a few of the taboo subjects Shannon comments on in her act.  An edgy act, it is clear that Shannon’s subject matter and content is for a mature audiences.

Wed Oct 13th 8pm Three Sirens of Song-Amy Campbell, Darrelle London and NLX

  • Three Tremendous performers, One Tremendous Night.   Join NLX, Amy Campbell and Darrell London @ The Staircase Theatre featured on our Cafe Stage.

BITCH GET FIT is the much anticipated, first full-length offering from NLX. But to call it a debut would be somewhat misleading. It’s taken two years of preparation, collaboration and one tiny lawsuit to make this masterpiece. Recorded in both NYC and Toronto, NLX joined forces again with acclaimed producer/composer Byron Kent Wong to create an extraordinarily distinct, vibrant and compelling album. In a time of one hit wonders and copycat artists, NLX stands alone.   Raised in the icy shadows of Canada’s steel city smoke stacks, NLX hails from the proud tradition of BS-free northern songwriting women. She continues to carry the electronically edged dark pop torch with BITCH GET FIT … 16 tracks of blow your mind and open your heart lyrical and musical smack. It is “fists in the air, tears on the floor, don’t look back but close the door” kind of music. From 3,000+ soft-seaters while opening for Matthew Good and David Usher, to Lower East Side rock clubs to intimate cafes in Greenwich Village, NLX invites you into her heart – and makes her way into yours – with delightful blunt humor lifted from the same divine source as her music. You laugh, you cry. Experience NLX – don’t be afraid, you might just find love.

Amy Campbell brings together classical training and folk sensibilities to create music that reaches into human experience and comes back with stories written from the soul. Devoted equally to lyrical craft, innovative musicianship, and engaging performances, Amy’s dozen years of writing, composing, and touring have cemented her position in hearts and playlists across the world.Amy Campbell’s first solo album: Architecture: Live at the Opera House was released with a sold out show in Halifax in November 2003. Recorded live at the Opera House in Lunenburg, NS one September afternoon, Architecture surpassed all expectations when it was featured on several radio programs (including CBC’s The Roundup, and Definitely Not the Opera as Indie Artist of the week), was reviewed in several local and national publications (Exclaim!, Herizons) and charted on campus and internet radio stations across Canada and the US (including Netscape and AOL radio).  November 2008 saw the release of a full length album and book project entitled Oh Heart, Oh Highway. A successful release tour included appearances at the Halifax Pop Explosion, Toronto’s The Cameron House, The BobCat concert series (Ottawa) and the legendary Yellow Door Coffeehouse (Montreal). New fans were drawn in by the album’s cinematic narratives, and ambitious artistic vision; as evidenced in March 2009, when Oh Heart, Oh Highway reached #1 on CBC’s coveted and influential Galaxie Folk/Roots chart.

“Simply put, Campbell is well poised to one day inherit Joni Mitchell’s place as Canada’s quintessential female singer-songwriter.” –Cindy Filipenko, Herizons

Classically trained in voice and piano, Darrelle London earned her chops playing as a teenager in cafes around her small hometown of Acton, Ontario, Canada. She has come a long way since those early days!
Darrelle’s story is one of following your heart over your head. With the smarts to get accepted to law school, she chose to instead take a chance on her music.
Since making that fateful choice, Darrelle has toured Canada, played in LA and New York, and opened for British star VV Brown at the Troubadour club in Hollywood. She has also performed at several festivals, including Lilith Fair, International Pop Overthrow, and North by Northeast.
In 2009, Darrelle’s song, Understand, was selected for inclusion on the 90210 TV soundtrack, which was sold across North America. The song appeared alongside music by internationally renowned artists such as Adele, All-American Rejects, N.E.R.D. and Jet
Darrelle’s music has been embraced by fans, music critics and media. She has made appearances on ET Canada, MuchMusic, eTalk and CBC. She also has an upcoming American television appearance on a PBS special about Lilith Fair.  Darrelle’s future looks bright. She recently received the “Best Pop” title at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. She is in the process of recording two new songs that she wrote with one of her “career idols,” Chantal Kreviazuk. Darrelle also looks forward to meeting many new fans during her upcoming U.S. and Canadian tour dates.
